Dreams and false alarms

(Here is the song I cannot get out of my head recently. I encourage you to go buy Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" and listen to it. Perferably on headphones, while you're traveling somewhere.) Amelia
I was driving across the burning desert The drone of flying engines People will tell you where they've gone I wish that he was here tonight A ghost of aviation Maybe I've never really loved I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel |

My photographer featured in ArtScape
Check out this month's issue of ArtScape for a profile on my very talented friend, Joshua Hakin, who did my promo photos for me. He's an amazing photographer and will probably be embarrassed that I posted this, but I don't care.

Beautiful work, Josh.

Opening for Penny Lang!
|
I just got invited to open for Canadian folk legend (and beloved family friend) Penny Lang on March 21 at the Yellow Door. Of course I said yes! It will be a wonderful night, no doubt. Montreal friends, don't miss it! Love, K. |
Black Sheep love ... and new songs on MySpace
|
Okay, I officially love the Black Sheep Inn. And Justin Rutledge. And David Baxter, his guitarist. And everyone there. Oh, how sweet an evening. I am going to get spoiled if I start thinking touring will always be this nice... I uploaded two covers from the Yellow Door show on MySpace for your listening pleasure. Hope you like. Love, K. |
Montreal, je t’aime...
|
What a night at the Yellow Door last night. It was *packed*--just when I thought it couldn't get any fuller, more people came in. And, as in Toronto, a lovely, attentive crowd. Forgot to post my setlist from Toronto, but here's what I played last night: Can't Stand Up Alone (a capella spiritual) Tremor and Slip The Thing Is Time to Go The Only Exception Gold in Them Hills (Ron Sexsmith) Everything Must Go (new tune!) Home Remedy (Encore: Maybe I'm Amazed) I got a recording of it, so you may hear some of them on MySpace before too long! Much love, Kaya |
Good times in snowy Toronto
Well, the show and the radio spot both went well yesterday. The people at CIUT were very cool and made things very easy for me. At Free Times the room was packed (thanks largely to my new friend Lisa and good ol' Adam Warner) and some old friends even showed up unexpectedly. Plus, it's the kind of room where people *really* listen. A fun time, I think, was had by all.
I'm glad I have today "off"--there's a huge snowstorm out there and I have to make my way to Montreal by train this afternoon. Sure am glad I'm not driving.
And then tomorrow: The Yellow Door!
Love,
Kaya
Press!
Hey, so as I sit in a cafe in Toronto at 6:30 AM (ah, the glamour of touring), I'm buzzin' about two happy pieces of press I just got.
One is a very nice review by Robert Reid of The Record:
http://news.therecord.com/arts/NightLife/article/302661
And the other is a big and highly flattering article by T'Cha Dunlevy in The Montreal Gazette:
http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/arts/story.html?id=2bef8d91-7249-425f-a136-c7b8b7988fc3
It's indescribably nice when people respond to what you've done, and moreover, when they seem to get what you were *trying* to do. It's not the reason why one does it ("we're gonna do it anyway," as Gillian sings) but it sure helps. Especially at 6:30 in the morning, alone in a cafe in Toronto.
Love,
Kaya
