The EP Sessions: Day Seven

First mixing session went well last night. This really *is* the magical part. No matter how well you try to do a take, there are always little things that make you cringe a bit. But then, a few things are compressed, a bit of reverb is added, levels are adjusted ... and abracadabra, it sounds great! I almost don't want to know how it all works; I kind of prefer the sense of supernatural transformation.

More of this tonight, when we hope to get the mixing done. It's getting close now...

Love,

K.

The EP Sessions: Day Six

Recording: done!

Everything should be there that needs to be there. Less is more, less is more.

Now on to mixing, where it all really comes together... I'm excited!

K.

The EP Sessions: Day Five

It was a long day for Jason today--laying down guitar AND bass tracks on four songs. But he did it, with aplomb as always. What a li'l trooper. (It was all worth it for the "Band on the Run" moment alone...)

I added some vocals but will do more of that tomorrow night, after which we plan to have the recording done like dinner. Here's hoping...

Love,

K.

The EP Sessions: Day Four

Oh me oh my, am I ever psyched. Last night's session went *so* well. Kathryn, my cellist, was an ace--she knew exactly what I wanted, despite my inarticulate attempts to tell her what that was ("like, you know, like... nice, long lines. And stuff?"). Then we moved on to the remaining drum-less songs and Johnny just *nailed* them. Some seriously heavy groove was achieved, I believe. We just zipped through everything and we were out by 11. Whew! Sometimes the studio gods are smilin'...

So, Monday next we add Various Other Stuff: bass, guitars, backup vocals, shakers, whatever we get it in our pretty little heads that we need. Then that should be it, and the mixing shall commence.

Wheee!

Love,

K.

The EP Sessions: Day Three

This time: SO much fun! Mostly because I spent the time lounging on the couch in the control room while other people did all the work, chiming in occasionally when asked whether I liked something or not. But seriously. Jason laid down some very tasty guitar and bass on "The Stars" and "The Thing Is," and I did some additional vocals. For the first time I started to get that feeling, listening to the songs: "hey...these tunes sound like they're on a record!"

I'm excited. To watch something grow from a little idea you came up with, sitting with your guitar on the livingroom rug, into a crafted, polished artistic work... Well, if I was wondering at moments last week why the hell people go through with endeavours like this...now I remember.

Next stop: cello and more drums on Thursday night. Woo!

Love,

K.

The EP Sessions: Day Two

Again: So. Tired.

It ain't all fun and games--ran into some challenges today, trying to add drums to what I'd done last time. It's a tricky way to do things, but I think the results will be worth it. Patience will be needed, and trust in the wonderful, musical people I have working with me.

Nothing worth doing is easy...

Love,

K.

The EP Sessions: Day One

So. Tired.

Laid down the base tracks of five of the seven songs today. My undying gratitude to Jason and Will for putting up with my ups and downs throughout the day... Man, recording is HARD. Way harder than going up on stage and doing one's thing. Remember this next time you listen to your favourite album!

We pick up next week. Until then, gentle readers, I bid you adieu.

Love,

K.

PS: If you're wondering where the music went from this site, don't worry; we're just fixing some things up. Meantime, feel free to listen to my MySpace if you really need your Kaya fix that badly. And hey, soon you'll have a CD to take care of that!

New venue for Montreal show

Hey all,

So, after a snafu and some attendant scrambling, we have a new venue for the Montreal show on November 25th. It's now at Le Cagibi on St. Laurent, in Mile End. Supposed to be a really nice place with good veggie treats and, of course, a bar. See my show listings on MySpace or Upcoming.org for more details.

See you all there, my Montreal friends & fam!

Love,

K.

To the studio!

So, that's it for shows for a little while (exceptin' an opener I'm doing at the Alex P. Keaton in October). The job on the table is now the record. I'm going into the studio October 15th to lay down the first tracks of the EP. Have I mentioned how *ridiculously excited* I am? I think I might have.

The studio, by the way, deserves some props here. It's called Willyboy Recordings, located here in scenic London, ON:

Will Haas is the proprietor and engineer-par-excellenc:

If all goes according to plans, I should have the disc in hand by the end of November. Makes a great Christmas present!

Love,

Kaya
